چکیده

As the World Wide Web continues to grow exponentially, researchers and search engine companies continue to look for techniques that will improve the quality of search results. One method that has been suggested is to classify Web pages by their type of genre and use this information to focus a search more narrowly or to rank search results. However, the growth of the World Wide Web has been matched by a similar growth in the variety of cybergenres found on the Web. This growth includes the replication of existing genre onto the Web, the evolution of existing genre, and the spontaneous appearance of new genre. This expanding and evolving set of Web genre makes it very difficult to identify automatically the genre of a Web page, thus making it difficult to use in the improvement of the quality of search results.

Run or Hide? Fixed and Moving Targets

We examine the time it takes for a random walk to hit an adversarial moving target. This problem was introduced by Aldous and Fill as the “cat and mouse” game. They conjectured that for every graph hitting an optimally moving target takes as long in expectation as hitting an optimally placed stationary target. We show this conjecture is false by presenting an instance of a graph where it takes ...

Intercepting moving targets: why the hand's path depends on the target's velocity

In order to intercept a moving target one must reach some position at the same moment as the target. Considering that moving towards such a position takes time, it seems obvious that one must determine where one can best intercept the target well in advance. However, experiments on hitting moving targets have shown that the paths that the hand takes when trying to intercept targets that are mov...
